I have been participating in the Chito Ryu Kata Facebook group recently. The nature of the posts varies according to the individuals interests and, as in all such groups, less than 10% are active in discussions at any one time.

There is a great cross section of people, spanning location, seniority, experience, and focus.

It is interesting to see the sensitivities of different people and to learn more about them by their posts.

Budo Theory - 2nd Edition

I received this exciting announcement from Rick Rowell, author of Budo Theory: Volume 1

After many requests, I finally bit the bullet and rewrote Budo Theory. The second edition is entitled Budo Theory: Exploring Martial Arts Principles. I have revamped, updated and added lots of new information.

If you are interested in finding out more about the book, I have started a new website www.budotheory.ca that I hope will grow into a resource for many.

You can explore the website and be directed to articles I have excerpted from the book. This will help provide you with an idea of what the book covers. You can also view the Table of Contents and Index.

The book will be available early March, but if you want to reserve copy(s) you can e-mail me and I will put them aside for you.

Rick Rowell http://budotheory.ca

A Reunion

40th Anniversary of the Atlantic Karate Club

I recently received the announcement for the 40th Anniversary celebration for the Atlantic Karate Club in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

I started at the AKC in January of (ugh) 1971. I was attending university in Halifax and Don McGraham, one of my classmates, was one of the organizers, along with John Dean, Kathy Moser and Dr. Bill Cole.

Most of my fond memories of my time in Halifax are wound up in the AKC. The hard basic training (basic because that's all we knew about); the mental training afterwards at the Lion's Head Tavern; clinics with Higashi Sensei; the 1973 visit by Osensei and Kugizaki Sensei and numerous adventures best left unreported.

I'm looking forward to attending the anniversary party and hope to see some old (old) friends, and make some new ones.

The details of the event are on the AKC web site http://www.atlantickarateclub.ca/

ICKF Dojo World Mapping Project

A few days ago I decided to combine an interest in web page creation with my interest in finding the whereabouts of all ICKF dojo around the world. The idea grew out of the ICKF Canada dojo database and the listings I displayed on the Canadian dojo webpage.

By scrounging basic dojo information from various web sites, I've built up a database of all the ICKF dojo I could find listed. It is displayed at http://ryusan.com/maps/.

I welcome any corrections that would make this more accurate.

Soke Sensei Irish Clinic

I attended the recent Chito Ryu Ireland seminar, given by Soke Sensei and Nakayama Sensei November 12-14th, in Portlaoise and Dublin, Ireland. I had never been to Ireland and this was a good reason to do so.

The town of Portlaoise (Portleesh) is compact and it was interesting to walk around and explore the high street. What made the trip was the friendly and cheerful hosts we had. As well as myself, there were other 'foreigners' in attandance from Scotland, Norway and Finland, so the "Irish" clinic turned into an international get together.

Training ranged from the basic Soke Sensei workout at the start to interesting exposure to some advanced applications and concepts. As always it was over all too soon and we left our hosts talking about when to have the next seminar.

On my way home I spent a few days in and around Dublin for some sightseeing, culminating with a tour of the Guiness Storehouse :)

What's in a Name?

In early 2008 the Canadian Chito Ryu Karate-do Association withdrew its connection with the International Chito Ryu Karate-do Sohonbu and Chitose Soke of Kumamoto, Japan. This was an agonized decision made by the CCRA board, and was supported by a majority of the Canadian dojo heads. The dojo that remained affiliated with the Japanese Sohonbu have since formed a loose association and are beginning to build their own association.

Eighteen months later, when I review Canadian internet sites related to Chito Ryu, I find them to be at best ambiguous and at worst misleading on the current situation. Many dojo don't seem to realize that they no longer should claim membership or affiliation with their former parent organization. If you regard the various web sites as a form of ad, it relates to the concept of 'truth in advertising'

Here is a short list of Canadian websites of groups no longer affiliated with the International Chito Ryu Karate Do (ICKF) Soke. I leave their degree of ambiguity up to you.

sabeankarate.com/
eyoseikan.ca
nbchitoryu.com/
calgarychitoryu.com
karatebc.org/associations/chito/
newmarylandkarate.com

Personally, the presumption of sites such as http://canadianchitoryu.ca/about irritates me. It states "The CCRKA is the national association of Chito-Ryu Karate-do in Canada... ". The CCRA is not "the" national association but rather, "a" national association. I suppose if you repeat a statement enough you start to believe it.

Also in my personal opinion, the presumption of retaining an un-changed style name is rather unique. Most of the previous groups that went independant, and there have been lots, revised their organizational name to reflect their new situation. We saw this with Yoshukai, Tsuruoka Karate, Renshikan, Ryusei Karate, Koshin-ha Chito Ryu, etc. The United States Chito Ryu Federation is the only notable exception.

Gradually this confusion will resolve into a more accurate representation of the current situation. In many cases I think that the web sites are just lagging behind since 90% of all web pages on the internet are stale and not updated.
